One thing that hinders us from reaching our ultimate well-being is stress. But what is stress? Why does it make us feel terrible? Stress encompasses a vast range of experiences, from small morning arguments with family to past traumas, triggering a plethora of emotions. These emotions often obstruct us from living life to its fullest potential. Have you ever been engrossed in a conversation with a friend while nagging thoughts keep intruding? These thoughts divert us from reality—the present moment.


Tips to manage stress

Stress can be defined as a state of worry or mental tension caused by challenging situations. It's a natural human response, urging us to address life's obstacles and threats.


Everyone experiences stress to some degree, but it's how we respond to stress that makes a significant difference in our overall well-being. Today, let's explore stress, befriend its positive aspects, and learn to understand it better.


At its core, stress is the psychological perception of pressure, and it triggers our body's response to potential dangers. Remarkably, stress exists in two distinct forms: 'Eustress' and 'Distress.'


Eustress, often experienced in reality, emerges from momentary challenges we face. It serves as a positive form of stress—a motivating force that aids us in coping with these challenges and fuels personal growth. Just as a rock transforms into a diamond under pressure, or an immune system strengthens through exposure to germs, the human mind thrives with adversity. Eustress is short-term, propelling us towards our goals and instilling resilience to confront future challenges with confidence. Embracing eustress is essential for fostering a healthier and happier life.


On the other hand, there's distress, the stress of thoughts. Distress arises when our minds get entangled in past traumas or anxieties about the future—events existing solely in our thoughts and not in the present moment. Unlike eustress, distress is a negative form of stress that can hinder our ability to fully experience life. It perpetuates a constant state of mental tension, pulling us away from the reality of the present. Long-term distress can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues, significantly impacting our overall wellness.


To effectively manage stress, we must differentiate between eustress and distress. While eustress can propel us towards growth and resilience, distress requires careful handling to prevent it from overwhelming our lives.


Here are some strategies to embrace stress positively:


1. Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a powerful practice that involves staying fully present and aware of the current moment without judgment. In our fast-paced lives, we often find ourselves dwelling on past events or anxiously anticipating the future, which can lead to heightened distress and anxiety. By cultivating mindfulness, we learn to anchor ourselves in the here and now, allowing us to break free from the cycle of overthinking and rumination.
